1. The Birth of the Italian Grand Prix: 1921
Long before Formula 1 existed, the Italian Grand Prix had already established itself as one of motorsport’s premier events.
First held in 1921, the race quickly became one of Europe’s most prestigious competitions. A year later, Monza opened its gates, beginning a relationship that has lasted more than a century.
Today, only the British Grand Prix can rival the Italian Grand Prix’s place for longevity in Formula 1. And because of our connection to Silverstone, it was only right to welcome guests to the historic Monza too.
2. Monza Joins Formula 1: 1950
When the Formula 1 World Championship of Drivers began in 1950, Monza was there from the very beginning.
Since then, every World Championship Italian Grand Prix has been held at Monza except for 1980, when the race temporarily moved to Imola while the circuit underwent redevelopment.
More than 75 years later, Monza remains one of the calendar’s most treasured venues.
3. Ferrari’s First Home Victory
There’s nothing quite like Ferrari winning at Monza.
When Alberto Ascari claimed victory in front of the Italian fans in the early years of Formula 1, it cemented the emotional bond between Ferrari, Monza and the Tifosi—a relationship that still defines the Italian Grand Prix today.

4. Formula 1’s Closest Finish Ever: 1971

Peter Gethin crossed the finish line just 0.01 seconds ahead of Ronnie Peterson to win the 1971 Italian Grand Prix—the closest finish in F1 history.
Remarkably, the top five cars were separated by less than a second.

6. Michael Schumacher Masters Monza
Michael Schumacher and Monza became synonymous throughout the early 2000s.

Today, Schumacher shares the record for the most Italian Grand Prix victories with Lewis Hamilton.
7. Sebastian Vettel’s Fairytale Victory: 2008
One of Formula 1’s greatest underdog stories unfolded at Monza.
Driving for Toro Rosso, a 21-year-old Sebastian Vettel stunned the paddock by taking pole position in torrential rain before converting it into his first Formula 1 victory.
It was also Toro Rosso’s first Grand Prix win—an achievement few thought possible.
8. Charles Leclerc Sends Monza Wild: 2019
Ferrari fans had waited nine long years for a home victory.
Charles Leclerc made sure the wait was worth it.
After a tense race defending from both Mercedes drivers, the young Monegasque crossed the line first, sparking one of the loudest celebrations Monza has ever witnessed.
The images of thousands of Tifosi flooding beneath the podium instantly became modern Formula 1 classics.
9. Daniel Ricciardo Ends McLaren’s Victory Drought: 2021
